Modular Lamp
Ideation
Rapid sketching generated many potential concepts. The most promising have multiple configurations, allowing the user to adjust how much light escapes through the shade at any given moment.
Biomimicry
Design inspiration came through studying the growth cycle of tulip bulbs. When the plants first emerge from the ground, the bulb is completely encased by its leaves. With time the leaves part, allowing the flowering tulip bulb to emerge. The lamp will function in a similar way.
Final Concept
The lamp is built of two main pieces: a stationary upper shade, and a removable lower shade.
Making
The mold is made by surfacing, gluing up, and turning poplar wood. During the turning process the form is periodically checked against a template. Once its profile is right it is sanded and cut. The shades are created by thermoforming polystyrene and acrylic over the mold. Identical molds are used to form both the upper and lower shades.
Tulip Lamp
Pendant
The Tulip Lamp consists of nesting shades and a bulb. The entire system is customizable, allowing the user to experiment with different shade and bulb configurations. Users may also choose to set it up as either a pendant or table lamp, depending on what lighting needs their unique home setting require.
